Some Idle Summer Thoughts….!

Been running around just too much that I’ve placed myself on a self imposed break.  I’ve said it before so don’t hold me to it… I hope to communicate here more as we move forward.

Too often honors and awards are placed on people who haven’t done a damn thing to deserve recognition.  My hero, role model and one who deserves recognition and support is my old teammate is George Martin.  George recently completed a 3000 mile walk across the country to raise awareness and money for the First Responders who worked at Ground Zero after the attack on September 11th.  Many of those workers are suffering illnesses that have either killed them or has left them with serious medical conditions.  Three hospitals (Hackensack University Medical Center, Mount Sinai and Long Island Jewish Hospital Center) have promised to provide services to Responders based on money raised. George took it upon himself to put himself on the line to raise $10,000,000 by walking in the heat, the cold, quiet streets and very busy highways for a cause.  I, along with several Giants teammates (Lionel Manuel and Stacy Robinson along with former Oakland Raider’s Hall of Famer Mike Haynes) joined him in late May for part of the walk in the Phoenix, Arizona area. While we played in the 70s and 80s George never made a Pro Bowl as a player but what he has done with for others is greater than what I’ve seen from any Hall of Famer. While most people talk the talk, George walked the walk and while the physical aspect of the walk has ended his cause has not. Please support George and those First Responders by making a donation to www.ajourneyfor911.info.

Great win for the Giants in Super Bowl 42.  Many of you have been asking me if the Giants will repeat.  Giants can repeat but they better recognize that in every game every team will play them as if that game is their Super Bowl.  If the Giants play their regular season games like regular season games they cannot win.  That was a key lesson the 1987 Giants learned after winning Super Bowl 21.  When you are the “Top Dog” you cannot be distracted by unnecessary crap or take a game, a half, a quarter, a series or a down off.  For the Giants, they will have to “bring it” every play to defend the crown they so proudly wear!

I was extremely happy for Michael Strahan finally winning a World Championship and then bowing out of the game gracefully. Coming out of Texas Southern University his play over the years has made all Black College Football players and fans proud!

My son Donald recently had his annual medical evaluation at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.  It’s always tough to see him undergo the bone marrow biopsy but his doctors have indicated that he has made a full recovery!
